ZX Spectrum +2A Refurb Part 1

I’ve seen a lot of YouTube videos during the lockdowns where people have brought old computers back to life. (Check out Mark Fixes Stuff or RMC - The Cave for a couple of great examples.) It got me thinking; weren’t there a few old computers in my parents’ loft? Once it was safe to travel and I could make the 300-odd mile journey to see the folks I ventured up into the loft to see what I could find. It was cold and a bit damp up there - never a good sign - and while there was a lot of stuff I couldn’t see any old computers. Then finally, in an old cardboard vegetable box, I found this:

Bask in its magnificence
Jackpot! A ZX Spectrum +2A! It has been in storage for over thirty years and sadly the plastic cover had long since disintegrated. The computer was covered in a thin layer of, well, something not electronics-friendly but I brought it back with me to see what it could do. In part 2, the first switch-on (from a safe distance).
